In NLP (NEURO LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING) we pay a lot of attention to the communication of the unconscious mind. That means we listen and look very closely, often to what the person is not saying. We also involve the body, and take notice of all sensations in the body. ‘Calibration’ is the word in NLP for this. To illustrate this here is a short story:

A client came in and was very sad about the suicide of his father. The words he used were that “it feels as if something is pinning him down on his chest and throat”. As I was listening I realized that this was an important event to work with but very often this is just an extension of a much earlier event. I asked the client what this sensation meant to him and he said: “Guilt and sadness”. He felt that he should have done something to prevent it. I then asked him to put all his concentration on this sensation and as I gently put some hand pressure on this area, I asked the client’s unconscious mind to take him back to the root cause of this guilt and sadness: Within seconds I could see him remembering something. “My biological father dad died in an accident when I was 6 years old. I never said good bye the morning I went to school and when I came back that afternoon he was gone. I FEEL SO GUILTY AND SAD ABOUT IT.”

I helped him clear that event with Time Line therapy and V/K dissociation. After we had cleared and healed that event the present event of the suicide lost its level of disturbance. The unconscious mind generalized the learnings forward in time and healed the recent event automatically. It is both techniques which are taught during a NLP Practitioners course.
