Thoughts From My Couch

The eyes are the windows of the soul ....literally......
She looked tired and wearied down although beautifully dressed. The emotional aftermath of a divorce was written all over her face. Worrying about financial security after a 35 year marriage and beginning a new life proved to be very difficult for her. She came to me to help her see light again, to have hope that she will be ok. Filled with bitterness, anger and regret she said: "For me; he is dead now!"

She looked tired and wearied down although beautifully dressed. The emotional aftermath of a divorce was written all over her face. Worrying about financial security after a 35 year marriage and beginning a new life proved to be very difficult for her. She came to me to help her see light again, to have hope that she will be ok. Filled with bitterness, anger and regret she said: “For me; he is dead now!”

Calibrating to her eye movements and unconscious communication I realised that he (the husband) was still pretty much very close to her face. As an NLP practitioner that is what we do: reading the mind through very subtle body movements. I asked a few questions about the picture of her ‘dead husband’. “He is in a coffin, he is dead” she said angrily. A very important part of NLP is changing submodalities in a person’s mind, which means changing the location, colours, size etc. of the pictures we unconsciously make. (These are all taught on our NLP coaching courses.)

Asking her about the submodalities (qualities of the picture of her husband) it was evident that it was close to her face, quite big and colourful. Questions about the picture in her mind about someone who died in her life a long time ago, proved to be behind her, black and white and very small. I helped her to move her husband’s picture to that of the long forgotten family member. The impact was immediate. “I can breath, it feels so light and open,” she said.

It was not only enough by moving her husband’s picture out; we also had to move a picture of her future in. Together we designed her future for her and put it right in front of her. At the end of the session she was smiling and excited by all the possibilities. Her facial expression was much softer and there was a glow on her skin. She smiled and said: “My life is only beginning now.”

I realised again that NLP can sometimes be pure magic. Change can happen very quickly. If you are interested in experiencing any of these techniques or become a certified practitioner please visit our website: www.ernestfrostnlp.co.za or e-mail, info@ernestfrostnlp.co.za
