How healthy is your mind?
Or perhaps an even better question would be:
How do you measure a healthy mind?
When I ask this question to people, some of them answer: ‘I don’t have depression or don’t have too much anxiety, so I must be ok’. Or they look at their achievements and successes and use that as proof that all is well. Some very successful and high achievers often have severe anxiety and/or depression. Who are you or would you be without the achievements?
In a way it is much easier to measure the health of our physical bodies. Going to the doctor and do all the blood tests and scans will quickly give you the result. The interesting thing is this: Most of the physical symptoms which manifests in the body as pain and disease often comes from an ‘unhealthy’ and painful unconscious body(mind). Whatever emotions were not properly dealt with and processed and were ‘buried alive’ in the past, will eventually show up in the body and in your relationships.
For me a healthy mind is a ‘Still’ mind. That means not easily gets triggered by other people and events. A healthy mind means there is very little or not at all any judgement of others. There is a general feeling of fulfilment and fullness and satisfaction without the never-ending chase for goals or food or alcohol or whatever is needed to fill that gap/emptiness inside. This ‘Stillness’ is not empty; It is a different kind of fullness. Fullness of the ‘I am’. Sometimes when I walk in a forest or after a meditation or after a breakthrough session with a client I get this sense of fullness inside. I aspire to live in this state as a way of being, more and more.
Eckhart Tolle says this amazing truth in his book: Stillness speaks:
“When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world. Your innermost sense of self, of who you are, is inseparable from stillness. This is the I Am that is deeper than name and form”.
Trauma from the past is what makes us lose ourselves and make us live a live a very busy but often noisy and meaningless life.
If you have lost that inner stillness inside you; it is time to clear up your past, all the painful emotions and limiting beliefs. Sometimes a seemingly small limiting belief and can pull your whole life of course.
